In addressing the Palos Verdes Shelf contamination, EPA works closely with the Montrose Settlements Restoration Program (MSRP). EPA’s focus is on the physical cleanup of the site and protecting public health, while MSRP’s focus is on restoring the natural resources—such as fish habitats and birds—damaged by the DDT and PCB contamination.
This year MSRP provided funds for two local marine educational organizations to teach students, teachers, and families about safe fishing practices. Both educational programs incorporate the comic book titled “What’s the Catch?” created by MSRP and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. The comic book tells the story of DDT and PCB contamination in the southern California marine environment.
Redondo Beach’s SEA Lab, one of the recipients of these funds, created the “Fun Fishing Program.” This teaches Los Angeles County Corps members from middle and high schools about avoiding DDT and PCB contamination in fish living in the local marine environment and how to fish safely. By the end of this three hour program students learn to identify fish, understand the history of DDT and PCB contamination in the local environment, learn how to fish and practice proper filleting techniques. Five student groups have completed this program so far and more students are expected to be a part of this hands-on opportunity through spring 2009.
The second outreach grant was awarded to Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (CMA) located in San Pedro, CA. The focus of this program is to present a curriculum to local third to sixth grade teachers to educate their students about fish contamination and safe fishing practices. CMA has held one workshop to date for teachers in the local area. MSRP and CMA are working together to formalize this curriculum in order to better distribute this important material to teachers. CMA is also educating local families about these issues through sponsored workshops and fishing trips.
In January 2009, MSRP will release a Request for Proposals to fund similar outreach projects. Please visit our website for updates and more information about the Montrose Settlements Restoration Program (www.montroserestoration.gov).
