Fishing Community Guidelines and Information

Fishing in Southern California is a great way to get out and enjoy the qualities that make this region special. From the weather and beaches to the variety of fish available, the area offers excellent fishing opportunities - if you are informed.

The Fish Contamination Education Collaborative (FCEC) aims to provide the best resources for the angling community. Our outreach materials cover topics ranging from pier fishing spots to making healthy fish choices. We are committed to ensuring that Southern California anglers have the information they need to fish safely and reduce their risk.

We are always working to improve our outreach. If there is a resource or guide you would like to see on our site, please contact the FCEC.

In Los Angeles County, you don’t need a fishing license to fish from public ocean piers, though all other regulations still apply. Each pier offers unique opportunities for target species, nearby beach activities, and a distinct angling community.

Determining which fish are safe to eat depends on the area where they are caught. Fishing areas in the red zone include Santa Monica Pier, Venice Pier, Hermosa Beach Pier, Redondo Beach Pier, Cabrillo Pier, Pier J, Rainbow Harbor, Belmont Pier, and Seal Beach Pier. Refer to the FCEC map to help minimize health risks associated with exposure to DDT and PCBs found in fish commonly caught along the coast of Los Angeles.
